Dead Love- A Zombie Lachlan Story

Hey everyone!

So for context if you don’t know, Lachlan is one of my murderous characters that has a deep devotion to a lad named Melvin. For Halloween last year, I wrote a short story of him as a vampire and his journey in hunting down Melvin.

For this year’s Halloween story, well, it’s in the title 😉

Enjoy!

“Happy Halloween Melvin!” Shouted Ava as she and Jessica made their way down Melvin’s garden path, being careful with where they were stepping as the sky was darkening quickly.
“Happy Halloween guys!” He smiled back as he held his front door open for them, the bright lights of his warm home shining, lighting their way.
Taking the final steps, they entered into Melvin’s home and Melvin shut the door behind them.
“So!” Began Ava. “Jessica here, told me that she has an idea for tonight’s spooky activity, but she has refused to tell me what it is until we got here. No matter how much I pestered her, she wasn’t budging!”
“Oh, I see.” Melvin said, looking curiously at Jessica with a slight tilt of his head. “What is it?”
A mischievous grin creeped onto Jessica’s face as she clasped her hands together.
She took a deep breath and then blurted it out dramatically.
“A graveyard walk!”
Ava gasped and Melvin sighed.
“Jessica no!” Ava shouted.
“Jessica yes! Besides, you guys never want to do anything PROPERLY spooky. You always want to do baby things. Come on, it’ll be fun. Or are you a chickeeeen?”
Melvin glanced at Ava then back at Jessica.
“I mean, you do have a point. But, what graveyard are we even going to, and how are we even getting there?”
“Well, there’s that graveyard like, 20 minutes away, but we do need to get the bus there.” Jessica stated.
Melvin sighed again and looked sympathetically at Ava.
“Well, if Ava is cool with it, I’m cool with it.” He shrugged.
Jessica looked at Ava.
“Ava?”
Ava gulped then slowly nodded.
“Yeah..I.. guess we could give it a go.” She stared at the floor, twisting her hands nervously.
“Excellent!” Jessica clapped her hands, but soon realised Ava’s nervous expression.

“Hey, it’ll be okay! You’ll be with Melvin and I, and I’ll hold your hand. If you get too scared, we can always leave Aves. I just really wanna give this a go!”
Ava’s expression softened and she smiled. “Let’s do this then!”

With the next 30 minutes filled with catching the bus, the trio soon arrived at the graveyard.
Entering through the large, gothic black gates, they slowly peered around, eyeing up the nearby graves.
“Wasn’t Lachlan buried here after he was killed in prison?”
Melvin and Jessica froze, fear flashing in Melvin’s eyes as they widened.
“He was?”
“Y-Yeah. At least..that’s what I heard anyways. I mean! I’m sure it’ll be okay!” Ava stuttered quickly.
Melvin turned to Jessica who gave him an understanding nod.
“We can turn back if you like?”
“No no, let’s just..do this. Come on.” Melvin started walking in front, followed by Ava and Jessica who both kept their eyes on him.
As they all quietly sauntered past the headstones, a mud-ridden hand gently stirred.
“This is creepy.” Jessica Whispered.
“Jessica! This is a place of respect and dignity!” Exclaimed Ava.
Jessica paused and shrugged. “Doesn’t mean it’s not creepy.”
The hand pulled and scratched, dirt filling under its black nails.
“Do you think there’s ghosts here?” Melvin mumbled.
“Don’t say that Melvin!” Ava gasped.
“Guys come on, you’re both fretting. It’s a graveyard, with dead people, who aren’t coming out anytime soon. Just relax. We’re fine.”
They all calmed down.
The hand performed its last stretch, bursting through the ground. The other hand followed. Pulling, scratching, pushing, until it too burst out from the wet ground.
Then a head, and a chest, and suddenly with a massive shove forward, a body arose, clothes dripping from its rotten body.

“We’ve came quite far haven’t we?” Melvin stated as he turned back to assess the distance.
“We have yeah!” Jessica agreed, judging the distance with him.
Suddenly, a hand latched onto Melvin’s leg and he screamed.
Staring up at him with dark eyes was Lachlan.
Undead Lachlan.
“Get off me you freak!” Melvin yelled, trying desperately to throw Lachlan off his leg.
Lachlan’s black nails dug in, causing Melvin a great deal of pain as he cried out.
Jessica ran over and tried to pull Lachlan away. Ava stood there in shock, eyes wide and a shaky hand over her mouth.
“Please Lachlan! Don’t!”
“Melvin, please. Don’t leave me here. You know I adore you. I just want to protect you!”
“STOP IT!” In a surge of adrenaline, Melvin managed to rip Lachlan’s hand from his leg and he began running, Ava and Jessica following closely behind.
Lachlan stood up, quickly limping towards the terrified group.
“MELVIN! GET BACK HERE!”
Melvin swiftly turned back before focusing again on where he was running.
They rapidly made it out of the graveyard, pulling the gates shut behind them.
Lachlan emerged from the darkness, limping while holding his arm.
“Melviiiin. Pleaaaase.” His voice droned.
“Lachlan.” Melvin whispered, almost saddened by the sight.
“Nope nope nope nope and nope. We are leaving.”
Jessica grabbed hold of Melvin’s arm and pulled him away from the gates, ensuring that he and Ava were following her to the bus stop nearby.
“On second thought, let’s stay home instead.”
